Smoke a bowl and watch this movie and tell me you aren't laughing and crying at the same time during the final race. I get chills up and down my body when Spritle says at the end "He's gonna do it." It is a joyous, weird as hell, unlike anything else you've ever seen movie. Every actor in it including the little kid and John Goodman is doing amazing work. It's a visual masterpiece, it's weird and inventive in so many ways you can't keep track of. It's one of my favorite movies ever made. I rewatched it for the first time since 2008 and it blew me the fuck away. They love it, they are ecstatic to talk about it, they say it's way ahead of it's time and on a different level than anything else (they're 100% right) - and they sold me. The episode about Speed Racer is an absolute joy. They covered Speed Racer in their Wachowski miniseries. I did not like it at all.Įarly in 2017 I got into the podcast Blank Check with Griffin and David. My mom drove me to the theater because she was nice. I was a big Wachowski fan after the Matrix trilogy and I also loved Matthew Fox from Lost. I saw this movie in theaters opening weekend when I was in 10th grade. I have talked about this movie a whole lot on this sub recently, so sorry if I'm repeating myself.
It brings me back to my childhood and reminds me of the glory of my adolescent imagination. Speed Racer gives me exactly what I want. If they tried to make it more realistic, I would have hated it.
What do you expect? Of course there are incompetent ninjas, gangsters, evil corporations and cliché villains. I remember when I saw the movie in 2008 and most reviews and people I knew in RL thought it was absurd. rather I mean they recreated the ridiculousness and campy humor of the anime. I don't mean that they made them realistic and believable. They brought Speed and the Racer family to life. The Wachowski's did something wonderful with their adaptation. The show was ridiculous, but to my adolescent mind, was the best thing around. It did not do well in theaters and is critically panned, but it is such a TRUE adaption of the anime/cartoon, that I can't help but love it.Īs a child, I watched Speed Racer every morning before I went to school.
This adaption of the old school 60s anime/cartoon is just perfect. Whenever I'm feeling down, I put it on and it lifts my spirits. To start, I must say I just fucking love this movie.
